"Mentor m, Mentor me sir! (Part One)
FOR MUSICIANS.
PLEASE SHARE THIS POST!
There has been a lot of misconception, abuse and misuse perpetrated on this word "Mentor" and the perpetrators are mostly young musicians.
Recently, every musician, instrumentalist and singer around here suddenly wanted to be mentored. Some would approach you with an offer of mentorship, acting as if they are giving you a privilege by mentoring them!
Some would even make jokes about it by calling some persons "Mentor m" - which means "My Mentor."
Some would even tell you when they chat you up "You know, you are my mentor?" Some would go to the extent of having two or more mentors on the same issue and field resulting to confusion! Your first mentor will tell you to jump up while the other will tell you to lie down...Confusion!
The first mentor will prescribe a solution to your problem and the other will counter it! Haven't you heard that you can't serve two masters at the same time? You cannot serve both God, and Mammon! God is greater than mammon so why would you serve both the greater and the lesser! You could have been wise to serve the greater, and the greater alone! This is a sermon for another day.
How could you hope to serve two masters in the same field? Knowing that the two masters. can only help you achieve almost the same goals? Wouldn't it be better to choose the one who can give you the best and leave the other? Confusion!

Who is a Mentor?
There has been a lot of misconceptions surrounding the terms 'Mentor' and 'Role model' so let's clarify the issues here.
Here's a piece I wrote some time ago :
WHO IS A ROLE MODEL?
A Role Model is a person whose behavior, example, or success is or can be emulated by others, especially by younger people. Role models can also be persons who distinguished themselves in such a way that others admire and want to emulate them."
The term "role model" is credited to sociologist Robert K. Merton, who coined the phrase during his career. Anybody can become a role model. Most times the determinant for a role model is visibility - by visibility I mean popularity, being famous! That's why most of the roles models we have these days are popular musicians, athletes (footballers, boxers, runners, wrestlers etc. ) religious leaders, actors, celebrities etc. Role models can exert either a positive influence or a negative one, it depends on the particular role model.
Note : There is no close relationship existing between a role model and the follower! You can say that Don Moen is your role model because you want to be like him, you are emulating his lifestyle, music style etc. Now understand you have no personal relationship with Don Moen, so you can't say he is your mentor unless you do.
